Who is Francis Magalona ?
Francis Michael Durango Magalona, popularly known as Francis M., was a Filipino rapper, musician, composer, actor, television personality, and businessman who lived from October 4, 1964, to March 6, 2009. He is recognized as a key player in Filipino hip hop.
On October 4, 1964, Magalona was born. He was the eighth of nine children born to prominent film stars Pancho Magalona and Tita Duran during the 1940s and 1950s. His grandpa, Enrique B. Magalona, was a senator from 1946 to 1955. He was named for Saint Francis of Assisi, whose feast day occurs on his birthday. Through his mother, whose first cousin was Gerardo Velasquez,Francis Magalona was also a second cousin of Cacai and Regine Velasquez.
He completed his high school education at San Beda College in Manila from 1981 to 1984 after attending Don Bosco Technical College in Mandaluyong.
In the 1980s, Magalona began his career as a break-dancer. He appeared in a number of Filipino motion pictures, such as Bagets (1984).
Music Career
He released the album Yo! in 1990.the first Filipino rap album to be released on a commercial basis.Yo! comprised a number of well-known hits, including “Mga Kababayan” (Fellow Countrymen), “Gotta Let ‘Cha Know,” “Cold Summer Nights,” and the only song Pia Arroyo recorded, a duet titled “Loving You.”[citation needed] His songs are in the Filipino hip hop style, which is characterized by politically conscious and thought-provoking rhymes in both Tagalog and English.
Rap Is FrancisM (1992) was released by Francis Magalona in 1992. With songs like “Mga Praning” (Paranoids), “Halalan” (Elections), and “Tayo’y Mga Pinoy” (We) addressing the myriad cultural and socioeconomic issues that beset his nation, including drug addiction and the negative impacts of colonial mentality.Because of its intricacy and thoughtful message, the album immediately established itself as a classic and served as the benchmark for other albums in the same genre[citation needed]. Magalona became known as one of his generation’s most politically concerned singers because to this album.
The publication of Meron Akong Ano, his third album! In 1993, Magalona started experimenting with Pinoy rock with the release of (I Got Something!). It also saw the formation of Hardware Syndrome, formerly known as Cannabis, the band that would, under Magalona’s direction, bring the fusion of Pinoy rock and rap to the Filipino music scene.
A number of musicians have been members over the years, including DJ Kimozave, DJ Radikal MK, Otep Concepcion, Kenji Marquez, Jack Rufo, Boyet Aquino, Elmer Blancaflor, Noel Mendez, Perf de Castro, Benjie “Bagets” Mendez, Albert Tamayo, and DJ Kimozave.
Francis Magalona was rapidly recognized for her brilliance in both musical genres. Alongside other well-known OPM musicians, he worked with Andrew E., Joey Ayala, Heber Bartolome of Banyuhay, Ryan Cayabyab, Michael V., Eraserheads, Juan Dela Cruz Band, and Death Threat are among the anopolists. Magalona collaborated with the rappers Pikaso, Gloc 9, and the Pinoy rock group Parokya ni Edgar in the later stages of his career.
Francis Magalona transferred to BMG Records (Pilipinas) Inc. in 1994, leaving Octo-Arts EMI Philippines, which had released all of his previous albums. Musiko Records is one of BMG Records (Pilipinas) Inc.’s fully owned sub-labels; it is also the label that released the groundbreaking Pinoy rock group The Eraserheads.
When Freeman was finally published in 1995, it solidified Magalona’s place in the Pinoy rock scene. Songs like “Kabataan Para Sa Kinabukasan” (Children For The Future), “Three Stars & A Sun,” and “Suckin’ on Helium/Kaleidoscope World” would become pivotal moments in would come to represent pivotal moments in Magalona’s oeuvre. “Intellectual Property Rights” is a song that samples a speech given by Fidel V. Ramos, who was president at the time.
Magalona would go on to make intellectual property rights a significant and deeply personal advocacy issue. “Kaleidoscope World” went on to win the 1996 NU 107 Rock Award for Song of the Year and the 1996 Awit Award for Best Produced Record of the Year. Raymond Red, a renowned director and cinematographer, directed this music video.
The press highlighted the diverse spectrum of influences present at Magalona’s video game-themed album launch at the Hard Rock Cafe in Makati, noting that in addition to music enthusiasts, he also had showbiz admirers and colleagues from Eat Bulaga! Magalona’s next album, Happy Battle, was published in 1996., where he had begun hosting events; and two groups of Sony PlayStations equipped with enormous screens so that attendees could play video games while taking in the performance.
Significant collaborations on the album included “Unstrung Heroes” with Ely Buendia, “Sapot” (Web) with project band Planet Garapata, which featured Mark Lakay, Jeng Tan, and Raimund Marasigan—later to form Sandwich—and “Make Your Move” with groundbreaking Filipino punk band Betrayed. In keeping with 1-800-Ninety-Six was composed in observance of the centennial of the Philippine Revolution of 1896, in keeping with the nationalistic theme in Magalona’s writing. The album itself became the only one to win Best Rock and Best Rap Album at the Katha Awards.[6] After learning that Magalona had leukemia, he and his wife Pia would refer to his battle with the disease by using the album name “Happy Battle.” “Rainy” won Best Folk song.
Television Career
Francis Magalona co-hosted LoveliNess and was among the first cast members of the youth-focused program That’s Entertainment in 1987. He also co-hosted the variety show Eat Bulaga! at midday. Eat Bulaga was given the moniker “Dabarkads” by Magalona! family, which includes the viewers, producers, and presenters. A tadbalik [tl] of barkada, which translates to “group of friends” in Tagalog, is dabarkads.
He was also a VJ for MTV Asia and Channel V Philippines.He was MTV Asia’s first Filipino VJ and remained with the network from 1996 to 2000.
In addition, he gained notoriety for his role in the second Bagets film (1984). Magalona portrayed the lead in Raymond Red’s 1997 made-for-TV film Kamada. The 16mm full-length feature was honored with honors from both the Asian TV honors and The Philippines Broadcasting Television in the same year.
In 2008, the franchise moved to the GMA Network under the name Pinoy Idol.In addition to television, he hosted live events and presentations. Fremantle Media, the owners of American Idol, also selected him as one of the judges for the first season of Philippine Idol, which aired on ABC (now TV5).[18] Magalona and his fellow judges, Ryan Cayabyab and Pilita Corrales, were not retained when the franchise transferred to GMA Network in 2008.
Independent Project
Francis Magalona released a compilation CD of the same name in 2002 with help from Carlo Maniquiz and Nick Tuason, who were then employed by FUBU Philippines as management personnel.
Francis Magalona established Filipino Pictures Inc., a production firm, and Red Egg Records, his own record label, where he also held the position of resident director. Magalona directed and produced music videos for various bands and solo singers, including Ely Buendia, through his production firm. At the 2006 MYX Video Awards, his work on Sponge Cola’s “KLSP” took home the Best Rock Video trophy.
Francis Magalona worked with Ely Buendia and other Filipino musicians shortly before he passed away on an album that was initially going to be called The Sickos Project but was ultimately titled “In Love and War” and published posthumously.[15] Both Francis M. and Ely Buendia were experiencing medical issues at the time. “Higante” (Giant), an album carrier single about strengths and illness, is a song about both. September 2009 saw the debut of its music video.
FMCC
Francis Magalona was a photographer who sent images to periodicals for possible publication. According to news sources, he was ecstatic to be admitted as a member of the Camera Club of the Philippines and later won praise from critics for his shots.
Additionally, Francis Magalona founded a clothing brand called FMCC, which stands for “Francis M Clothing Co.” FMCC is offered for sale in establishments called “3 Stars & A Sun.”
Along with Ely Buendia, he established the Heartist Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists Filipino artists facing both health and financial difficulties.
Cause of death
At The Medical City Ortigas in Pasig, Magalona was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia on August 8, 2008. Magalona made the following appeal to the public and media:
I want privacy with my family; I don’t want a media circus. I would prefer to discuss how we might ask for blood donations to replenish the supply that I used while I was in the hospital

On March 11, 2009, Francis Magalona was cremated in La Funeraria Paz in Quezon City before sunrise. Later that morning, at Christ the King Parish Green meadows, a final Mass was said for him. A few hours later, his ashes were interred at Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina, which caused traffic in the Marikina Riverbanks neighborhood around the park to stop as fans and a large number of people from the entertainment industry joined the convoy. Magalona was awarded military decorations by the Philippine Army for his service as a sergeant in the reserves and his patriotism. The flag that covered his casket was given to his widow, Pia.
Personal Life
Francis Magalona was introduced by actor Richard Gomez to Pia Arroyo at a party in a disco owned by film director Ishmael Bernal, and the couple married in 1985.The couple had eight children, two of whom were Magalona’s stepchildren: Unna (1983), Nicolo (1984), and television personalities Maxene (1986), Frank (1987), Saab (1988), Elmo (1994), Arkin (1999), and Clara (2000) who entered showbiz to follow their father’s footsteps.
On an episode of the YouTube series Pinoy Pawnstars uploaded on October 17, 2023, Abegail Rait, a former flight attendant, claimed to have had a relationship with Magalona and that they have a 15-year-old daughter together Francesca ‘Cheska’ Magalona.
